Antigua and Barbuda.- During the 55th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) held in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez called on member states to support the Multinational Mission for Security Support in Haiti (MSS). He emphasized the mission’s critical role in restoring peace and security to the Haitian people and stressed that Haiti’s prolonged crisis poses a serious threat to the entire inter-American region.
Álvarez endorsed the United Nations Secretary-General’s proposal for a hybrid-format mission with strong coordination and sustainable funding. He urged the OAS to contribute to consensus-building, align with international efforts, and provide sustained, coherent responses to the Haitian crisis. He also highlighted the broader regional challenge of rising insecurity, calling for modern, people-centered cooperation to combat transnational crime and evolving threats.
The Foreign Minister also announced that the Dominican Republic will host the Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Public Security of the Americas (MISPA) in Santiago de los Caballeros, focusing on police reform and modernization. As president of the Summit Process for the upcoming 10th Summit of the Americas, Álvarez emphasized the Dominican Republic’s promotion of an expanded concept of human security, which includes food, water, and energy security.
